Speaker: Carole Lyles Shaw
Program: “What Is a Modern Quilt? The Myths and the Magic!” ABOUT ME I love sharing my love of modern quilting! Quilters who attend my lectures and workshops rave about my exciting content, supportive and fun teaching style and well-designed workshop materials. Students always comment that my workshops introduce traditional and contemporary quilters to modern quilting in a low-stress, liberating environment. Carole is a modern quilt designer, author and workshop teacher who has been an active member of the quilt and fiber art community for over twenty-five years. Carole always takes a modern, improvisational approach to her quilt designs. Carole’s passion and focus is on designing quilts for the modern quilt movement. She lectures about modern quilting and teaches modern workshops for beginning and experienced quilters from all backgrounds and styles. Carole served on the Board of Directors for The Modern Quilt Guild (2015-2017). She co-founded and served as the first President of the Sarasota Modern Quilt Guild in Sarasota, FL. Many of Carole's quilts have been exhibited in museums and art shows in the U.S. and internationally. Her modern quilt designs and articles have been published in the Modern Quilt Guild Journal, American Patchwork & Quilting, Patchwork Professional [Germany], Today's Quilter, Modern Patchwork Magazine and more. Carole is the author of two books on modern quilting: Madly Modern Quilts and Patriotic Modern Quilts. Both are available on Amazon and in local quilt shops. She has also published a series of modern quilt patterns available on her website: www.CaroleLylesShaw.com. This lecture and trunk show introduces quilters of all backgrounds to the modern quilt movement. Intimidated by modern quilts or just confused or curious about this emerging trend in quilting? Carole dispels some of the myths and misunderstandings so you can understand and appreciate this new style of creative quilt expression! There will be lots of time for questions and answers. Speaker: Kim Oleson
Program: Modern Batiks of Java and Bali
About Kim: When I’m not in my quilt studio, you can find me snuggling my dogs. I have been a fiber artist, quilter and longarmer for over 25 years. I began sewing on the old Singer I found in my room when I was a little girl. I studied textiles, design and printed surface design in college, and my style has continuously evolved since then. I take inspiration from nature, particularly the colors of the ocean and tropical flowers.
I have been teaching sewing, quilting, and fiber arts for over 15 years. I enjoy seeing the pride my students take in their completed projects. I fell in love with traditional Hawaiian quilting after having the opportunity to learn the art from the masters in Hawaii. I have developed my reverse applique techniques over years of experimentation with methods and materials. Lecture: This 1-hour lecture and trunk show features the batik-making process in Java. I will share photos, videos and samples from my experience designing and making batiks in Java. WORKSHOP (IN PERSON): “Raw Edge Reverse Applique”
Date: May 17, 2024 Time: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm A kit is required for this workshop. It costs $30 and includes all the supplies, equipment, pattern and materials to make a 12.5” square block that can be used in a quilt, a bag, a pillow or other project. Kit fee is payable to Kim Oleson on the day of the workshop by cash (exact change, please) or credit card. Literally everything is provided. Just bring yourself, a paint shirt or apron, and your favorite thimble. And, if you don’t have a thimble, those will also be available! |

Speaker: Pat Speth
Program: Fabulous Nickel Borders
About Pat: Pat Speth began quilting in 1988 when she purchased a wool quilt batting from her Grandmother's auction. "I checked out a stack of quilt books from the library and fell in love with the patterns and designs, I knew I could not stop with just one quilt."
Pat started working with 5-inch squares as a basis for her quiltmaking in 1993 after attending her first retreat. She was asked to do a program for her guild in 1997 using the 5" squares, which gave her the push to explore new uses and techniques for working with the squares. Pat, while working a full-time job, started on the book, Nickel Quilts in 1998 and was able to have it ready for the publishers in June 2001. After juggling her full-time job and her quilting for many years, Pat moved into a full time quilting career in July 2003. "I have found my passion in life, and I can't imagine doing anything else." Pat is currently working on her line of individual patterns, building a creative community on her Facebook Group, and presenting Zoom Lectures to quilt guilds. Pat lives in St. Paul, Minnesota. Fabulous Nickel Borders Lecture
Turn a nice quilt into a WOW quilt by adding easy-to-piece Nickel Borders. In this lecture we focus on easy to piece borders that are made from 5" squares. I will show many of my quilts that have pieced borders and I walk you through my method of “auditioning” borders for a quilt. We have all been there; the inside of the quilt top is done and now what do I do for a border. This lecture will give you many ideas to choose from and allow you to awaken a whole new level of creativity. I have loved designing pieced borders over the years and adding them to my quilts. My book, Nickel Quilts & Borders contains 260 pieced border ideas and I look forward to sharing many of them with you during the lecture! There is no workshop this month.

Speaker: Kelly Young
Program: Make Your Scraps Work!
Kelly Young is a Louisiana native living in Germantown, TN. She is the author of Perfectly Pieced Quilt Backs (2023), Scrappy Improv Quilting (2021), and Stash Statement (2018). She is also a pattern designer and blogger, and has traveled to teach her techniques to groups all over the country.
Kelly is a former BERNINA Brand Ambassador and Aurifil Thread Artisan. As a former elementary teacher of 15 years, she loves sharing knowledge and encouraging others in their own creativity, all while keeping her classes light and fun! Although she often uses fabrics with bold, fresh colors, Kelly’s quilts encompass a wide range of styles. As she says, “I try not to label myself; if I like it, I make it!” Kelly’s quilts and patterns have been featured in several national magazines and digital magazines, including Modern Quilts Unlimited, Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, Quilt-It Today, Modern By the Yard, and Make Modern. Program: “Make Your Scraps Work! Quilts from my books, Scrappy Improv Quilting and Stash Statement” This trunk show includes all quilts from my first two books, as well as a few others, and I'll show you just how easy it is to use your own scraps to create quilts with amazing texture and interest. Workshop: Scrappy Improv Quilting
Date: October 18, 2024 Time: 9:00 am to 3:30 pm You will learn how to piece your own scraps using the three methods for improv piecing outlined in Kelly’s book, Scrappy Improv Quilting. You will be required to purchase the book so you have these instructions and the pattern we will use. These methods allow you to use plenty of larger pieces (even though all of the pieces in the finished quilt appear tiny!). Then, you'll incorporate those happy, scrappy blocks into a fun quilt pattern from the book. We will be making the “Fall Foliage” pattern. By using your own treasured scraps, you'll create a mini quilt uniquely yours, and you're sure to love it! This fun method is versatile, and with step-by-step patterns to follow, it is doable for every single quilter! All Skill Levels |
